When Irma’s niece was born 27 years ago with Cystic Hygroma, she was ushered into the world of special needs. Ten years ago, her unborn son was diagnosed with Down syndrome. Determined that her son would have the same opportunities as other children, Irma joined the Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles (DSALA) to prepare her for the challenges her son would face. She is now the coach of the VIP Special Needs Soccer Team for AYSO and the assistant coach for the VIP Special Needs Softball Team in Downey. She and her family participate in the annual Los Angeles Down syndrome “Buddy Walk,” as well as fundraise for families to attend “Our Own Family Camp” for families of children with Down syndrome. Professionally, Irma is the Senior Customer Service Representative in the Commercial Accounts Division at the Department of Water and Power, where she has worked for the last 25 years.
